Which sunflowers go into bouquets
Cut sunflowers are not the oilseed crop but ornamental annual sunflowers (Helianthus annuus) with a single head on a straight stem. Most modern cut varieties are pollenless: they do not drop yellow pollen on clothes or tablecloths and last longer in the vase.
Cut varieties usually have 10–15 cm heads; double types are smaller. Ukrainian sunflowers are in season from July to September, while imported flowers are available all year.
What sunflowers symbolise
- Joy, warmth and optimism — thanks to the bright colour and sun-like shape.
- Ukraine. Sunflower fields have become one of the country's best-known images, and Ukraine has long been among the world's top producers of sunflower oil.
- Art. Vincent van Gogh's "Sunflowers" still lifes (1888–1889) made the flower a symbol of painting.
The popular idea that a mature sunflower follows the sun all day is only half true: young plants do track the sun, but open flower heads mostly stay facing east.
What to pair sunflowers with
- Blue and yellow: delphinium, cornflowers, sea holly, statice.
- Warm autumn: chrysanthemums, alstroemeria, hypericum, terracotta roses, wheat.
- Meadow style: daisies, lavender, lisianthus, grasses and greenery.
- Single-variety: 5–15 sunflowers with bold foliage or on their own.

Who to give them to and when
- Colleagues and friends — for birthdays, promotions, housewarmings.
- Teachers on 1 September and at graduation.
- Men: sunflowers are one of the few "universal" flowers without a romantic message.
- Independence Day and other holidays — in blue-and-yellow bouquets.
- As a sign of support: a bright bouquet is a good way to cheer someone up.

How to make the bouquet last
- Plenty of water. Sunflowers drink a lot: fill a tall vase halfway and top it up daily.
- Angled cut. Recut 2–3 cm with a sharp knife every 1–2 days.
- Leaves. Remove all leaves below the waterline and some of the upper ones — they wilt quickly and draw moisture.
- Heavy heads. Choose a tall, stable vase with a narrow neck so the stems do not flop.
- Position. A cool room away from direct sun and draughts.
With good care sunflowers last 6–10 days. If a head droops, recut the stem and stand the flowers in deep cool water for a few hours.
Sunflowers at weddings
Sunflowers are a popular choice for summer and rustic weddings: a bridal bouquet with sunflowers, daisies and wheat, a boutonniere made from a small double head, table arrangements in jars and jugs. They are a smart choice for a hot day, as they are hardier than many delicate flowers.

It depends on the season and number of stems: Ukrainian sunflowers are more affordable in summer, while imported ones are used in winter.
Do sunflowers shed pollen?
Modern cut varieties are pollenless and do not stain. Pollen mostly comes from garden and oilseed sunflowers.
