The sunflower is one of the most recognisable summer flowers: its big, sun-like head lifts the mood instantly, and in Ukraine it is also seen as one of the country's symbols. Here is which varieties suit a bouquet, what to pair sunflowers with, who to give them to and how to make the bouquet last longer. More flowers with photos, names and meanings are in our guide to types of flowers. When sunflowers bloom and whether they really follow the sun: sunflower facts.

Cut sunflowers are not the oilseed crop but ornamental annual sunflowers (Helianthus annuus) with a single head on a straight stem. Most modern cut varieties are pollenless: they do not drop yellow pollen on clothes or tablecloths and last longer in the vase.
Cut varieties usually have 10–15 cm heads; double types are smaller. Ukrainian sunflowers are in season from July to September, while imported flowers are available all year.
The popular idea that a mature sunflower follows the sun all day is only half true: young plants do track the sun, but open flower heads mostly stay facing east.
Sunflowers are a statement on their own, so a mixed bouquet usually has 3–5 of them with smaller flowers around. For Ukrainian-style ideas, see our ethno bouquet guide.

The world’s most famous sunflower bouquet is a painting. In the summer of 1888 in Arles, Vincent van Gogh painted several still lifes of sunflowers in a vase to decorate the room where his friend Paul Gauguin was to stay. In the winter of 1888–1889 he painted repetitions of them. Today they hang in museums in London, Amsterdam, Munich, Philadelphia and Tokyo.
Van Gogh painted the sunflowers at different stages, from fresh to shedding petals, so his Sunflowers are read not only as a symbol of sun and joy but also as a reminder that time passes. To recreate the look at home, place a few sunflowers in a simple clay or yellow ceramic vase without extra greenery.
With good care sunflowers last 6–10 days. If a head droops, recut the stem and stand the flowers in deep cool water for a few hours.
Sunflowers are a popular choice for summer and rustic weddings: a bridal bouquet with sunflowers, daisies and wheat, a boutonniere made from a small double head, table arrangements in jars and jugs. They are a smart choice for a hot day, as they are hardier than many delicate flowers.
It depends on the season and number of stems: Ukrainian sunflowers are more affordable in summer, while imported ones are used in winter.
Modern cut varieties are pollenless and do not stain. Pollen mostly comes from garden and oilseed sunflowers.
Yes, it is one of the best options: bright, simple and not overly romantic.
