The Carpathian Biosphere Reserve is one of Ukraine’s great natural treasures. It takes in mountain peaks including Hoverla, ancient beech forests, alpine meadows and the famous Valley of Narcissi. Here is what the reserve protects, which rare plants grow there and how to behave if you plan a visit.
Spring flowers delivered: tulips and potted plants.
About the reserve
The reserve was founded in 1968 in the Zakarpattia region and in 1992 became part of UNESCO’s network of biosphere reserves. It consists of several separate massifs at different altitudes, from the Tysa lowlands to the high mountains, so almost every natural zone of the Ukrainian Carpathians is represented.
The main massifs
- Chornohora: a high ridge with Hoverla (2,061 m), Ukraine’s highest peak, alpine meadows and glacial lakes.
- Svydovets and Marmarosh: mountain massifs with high pastures and rare alpine flora.
- Uholka–Shyrokyi Luh: one of Europe’s largest tracts of virgin beech forest, part of the UNESCO World Heritage site “Ancient and Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and Other Regions of Europe”.
- The Valley of Narcissi near Khust, where the narrow-leaved daffodil flowers in spring.
- Kuziy-Trybushany and the Yuliivski Hills: massifs with rare woodland and steppe plants.
Rare plants
- Alpine edelweiss, the symbol of the high mountains, grows on limestone cliffs and is listed in the Red Book of Ukraine.
- Narrow-leaved daffodil turns the Valley of Narcissi white in late April and May; more in “Daffodils”.
- Myrtle-leaved rhododendron (“chervona ruta”), a low shrub with pinkish-red flowers on the high pastures, celebrated in Ukrainian songs.
- Mountain arnica, crocuses and gentians brighten the mountain meadows.
Most of these plants are protected by law: picking or digging them up is forbidden. Which wildflowers to leave alone is covered in “Wildflowers”.
If you visit
- Check the reserve’s website for open trails and whether a permit is needed.
- Stay on marked eco-trails.
- Do not pick plants or leave litter.
- Mountain weather changes fast: bring warm, waterproof clothing and water, and tell someone your route.
