What “eternal memory” and “Kingdom of Heaven” mean

Eternal memory

Eternal memory is a church and folk phrase of respect. It means the person is not erased from the lives of those who remain: their life, deeds and love will be remembered.

  • Respect. An acknowledgment that the life that ended had weight.
  • Remembrance. A promise not to drop the name from family memory.
  • Prayer. In the Orthodox tradition it is also a request that the soul find rest.
  • Support. For the family it is a sign that their grief is seen and shared.

Kingdom of Heaven

Kingdom of Heaven in Christianity is the hope that a righteous soul finds lasting peace with God. In a condolence message it is a wish of rest for the dead and a comfort of faith for the living.

How to comment on posts about a death

  • Keep it short and use your own words.
  • Do not ask how they died unless the post already says so.
  • Do not say “time heals” or compare it with someone else’s grief.
  • If you are close, offer something specific: bring food, collect the children, be at the funeral.
