When grief strikes, long speeches are rarely appropriate. A short condolence — one or two sincere sentences — often comforts more than a paragraph of general phrases. Here are short condolence messages: one-liners, with and without religious wording, for texts, colleagues and acquaintances, plus wording for a wreath ribbon or a card with flowers. Longer messages and advice are in our guide to condolence messages.
One-sentence condolences
I’m deeply sorry for your loss.
Please accept my sincere condolences.
I’m so sorry. I’m here for you.
Grieving with you.
Forever remembered, [name].
I bow my head in memory of [name].
No words, only sorrow and sympathy.
Thinking of you and your family.
Sending hugs. Stay strong.
May your memories give you strength.
Religious phrases: when to use them
Phrases such as “Eternal memory”, “May he rest in the Kingdom of Heaven”, “Rest in peace” and “May the earth rest lightly on her” are traditional in Ukraine, and most people see them as a sign of sincere support. They are especially fitting if the family is religious or the deceased was close to the church.
Eternal memory and the Kingdom of Heaven. Sincere condolences to the family.
May God rest the soul of [name] and give you strength.
Rest in peace. We remember.
We pray for the repose of [name]’s soul and for your family.
A wreath or basket ribbon usually carries one short sentence and a signature:
“Forever remembered. From the [surname] family”
“We mourn and remember. From the [company] team”
“To our dear mother, from her children and grandchildren”
“Eternal memory to the Hero. From his comrades”
“Rest in peace. From your friends”
The same words or any one-liner from this article suit a card with a bouquet. Ribbon text is usually agreed with the florist so that it fits.
Flowers with a short card
A small bouquet or basket with a short card is a tactful way to express sympathy if you can’t attend in person. Light-coloured flowers in an even number are customary in Ukraine: white roses, chrysanthemums, lilies. See funeral flowers etiquette for the rules. Restrained arrangements are among white roses and flower baskets.
