An autumn wreath is the easiest way to bring the mood of the season indoors. Hang it on the front door or a wall, or lay it in the centre of the table around a candle. Almost everything you need can be gathered on a walk: pine cones, acorns, bright leaves, wheat ears, sprigs of berries. Here's how to make an autumn wreath step by step, which materials to choose, how to keep leaves bright and how to make the wreath last all autumn.

What you'll need

  • A base ring. A ready-made grapevine, foam, straw or wire ring. Or make your own from bendy willow, birch or vine stems twisted into a circle and tied with wire.
  • Filler material. Dried twigs, moss, eucalyptus, wheat ears or dried flowers to cover the frame.
  • Decorations. Pine cones, acorns, chestnuts, nuts, bright leaves, rowan and rose hips, dried orange slices, cinnamon sticks, mini pumpkins, physalis.
  • Tools. Glue gun, thin florist's wire, secateurs, scissors, ribbon for a bow.

Tip: lay everything out on the table in groups first — it's easier to see the palette and spot what's missing.

How to make an autumn wreath: 4 steps
  1. Prepare the frame. If using branches, twist 3–4 bendy stems into a ring of the right size (30–40 cm for a door) and secure with wire in several places.
  2. Build the foundation. Wire small bunches of dried twigs, moss or wheat around the ring, each bunch overlapping the last to hide the fixings. Work in one direction.
  3. Add the big accents. Attach pine cones, mini pumpkins, apples or pomegranates with wire — glue won't hold them. Place them in groups of 3 or 5 rather than evenly spaced, for a more natural look.
  4. Fill the gaps. Glue on leaves, berries, acorns and small dried flowers with a glue gun.
  5. Finish. Tie on a velvet, linen or jute bow and make a hanging loop at the back.

1. With feathers

Pheasant or guinea fowl feathers with cones, acorns and wheat give a subtle hunting-lodge style. Use decorative feathers from a craft shop and don't overdo it — 5–7 are enough.

2. With autumn leaves

The most accessible option. Gather maple, oak and Virginia creeper leaves in shades from yellow to burgundy and arrange them as a gradient. To stop them curling after a few days, treat them first (see below).

3. With wheat and grasses

Wheat, oats and ornamental grasses are a traditional symbol of harvest. This wreath looks great on a front door; finish it with a linen ribbon.

4. With fruit

Fresh apples and pears spoil quickly, so for a long-lasting wreath use dried orange, lemon and apple slices, cinnamon sticks and star anise. Dry orange slices in the oven at 80–100 °C for 2–3 hours, turning occasionally.

5. With mini pumpkins

Decorative gourds are the ultimate symbol of autumn. Real ones are heavy and can rot, so artificial or tiny dried ones work better.

6. With a big bow

If the wreath has only a few elements, a large velvet bow in mustard, terracotta or burgundy makes it look complete.

How to preserve leaves and make the wreath last

  • Glycerine. Mix 1 part glycerine with 2 parts warm water and stand leafy twigs in it for 3–5 days. The leaves stay supple and keep their colour for a long time.
  • Pressing. Dry leaves between the pages of a heavy book for 1–2 weeks — they'll be flat but won't curl.
  • Spray. Clear hairspray or acrylic varnish helps leaves hold on longer.
  • Placement. Protect an outdoor wreath from rain by hanging it under a porch. Indoors, keep it away from radiators.

What about fresh flowers?

You can add fresh flowers in water tubes or make a table arrangement on floral foam with chrysanthemums, roses and hydrangeas — it will last about a week. For seasonal plants, see what flowers in October, and for long-lasting ideas, dried flower arrangements. Ready-made autumn gifts are in our gift baskets and chrysanthemums.
