Feng Shui for Valentine's Day: How to Attract Love

There is no scientific evidence that it affects relationships, but many people enjoy its ideas: decluttering, pairs of objects and love symbols create a romantic mood and help you see your home afresh. Here are the main tips feng shui masters give for Valentine's Day.

Start by decluttering

In feng shui every new beginning starts with clearing space. Do a thorough clean, sort out your wardrobes and let go of things you have not used for a long time so that "qi" energy does not stagnate.

Feng shui masters especially recommend:

• Removing reminders of past relationships, such as letters, cards and photos together, if you are ready for new love.
• Adding pairs: two bedside tables, two lamps, two armchairs, and replacing solo photos and pictures in the bedroom with paired ones.
• Caring for flowers: feng shui dislikes wilted flowers. Dried flowers are seen as "frozen" energy and are best kept out of the bedroom, though a neat dried arrangement is fine in the living room.

Flowers of love in feng shui

The main flower of love in feng shui is the peony, called the "queen of flowers" in China and a symbol of wealth, romance and a happy marriage. Soft-coloured roses in pink, peach and cream also work well. As for red, in Chinese culture it is the colour of joy, luck and love, so red roses make a lovely gift too; some masters simply suggest thornless roses for the bedroom.

How to activate the love corner

In the Western school of feng shui the love and marriage area is the far right corner of a flat or room as you face in from the front door; in the classical school it is the south-west sector. If that is a bathroom or kitchen, use the same corner of the bedroom instead.

• A pair of mandarin ducks, a symbol of fidelity, as these birds are considered inseparable in China.
• Plum blossom or peonies, fresh or in a picture.
• Paired objects: two candles, two hearts, two figurines.
• Images of loving couples, people or birds.
• Warm colours: pink, red and peach in textiles and décor.

Do not overload the corner: one or two symbols added gradually are enough.
