Flowers for mum are the most common and the most personal gift. She'll be happy with any bouquet, but it means even more when it's clear you thought about her: her favourite flowers and colours, her age and where the bouquet will stand. Here's how to choose flowers for your mum's birthday, International Women's Day, Mother's Day or just because.
Ready-made bouquets are in our flowers for mum and flowers in a box sections.
A bouquet to suit her personality
The surest guide is what your mum already loves: the flowers she grows in the garden, the colours in her wardrobe and home. If you're not sure, the tips below will help.
Flowers for different occasions
- Birthday. Her favourite flowers or a seasonal bouquet; for a milestone, a fuller arrangement or basket. An odd number of stems in a small bouquet is the usual custom in Ukraine.
- 8 March. Spring tulips, daffodils, mimosa and freesia — light and bright.
- Mother's Day. The second Sunday in May, tulip and early peony season; see Mother's Day in Ukraine.
- Just because. A small bouquet for no reason is often remembered longer than a holiday one.
Practical tips
- Think about size and weight. For an older mum, a small bouquet or a box arrangement that needs no vase is more convenient.
- Avoid strong scents if she is sensitive: swap lilies and hyacinths for roses or lisianthus.
- Consider allergies — if in doubt, choose a potted plant or low-pollen flowers.
- Choose long-lasting flowers: chrysanthemums, alstroemeria and carnations last 2–3 weeks — see our vase life ranking.
- Add a card with warm words — ideas in our messages for mum.
How to choose fresh flowers
- Stem ends are pale and moist, not dark or slimy.
- Petals are firm with no brown edges; a rose's outer guard petals may be slightly dry — that's normal.
- Leaves are green and not limp, and the water in the florist's bucket is clean.
- Buds shouldn't be fully open — the bouquet will last longer.
If you live far away
Order delivery: the florist makes up the bouquet, sends a photo before it leaves and the courier delivers it at a convenient time. Call your mum when it arrives to make the gift even warmer. The same rules apply for a mother-in-law or grandmother: think about taste, age and convenience.
