On 8 May Ukraine marks the Day of Remembrance and Victory over Nazism in the Second World War of 1939–1945. 1 October is the Day of Defenders of Ukraine, when people thank those protecting the country today. The red poppy has become the symbol of remembrance and is worn on clothing on memorial days.
For many veterans, a personal visit, a phone call, a sincere thank-you and time spent together matter more than flowers. Flowers complement attention but do not replace it. If someone dislikes public attention, congratulate them quietly and in person.
