Forgiveness Sunday is the last day before Great Lent and the end of Cheesefare (Maslenytsia) week. On this day people ask one another for forgiveness and sincerely forgive in return, so as to begin the fast with a clean heart. The date changes every year because it depends on Easter: in 2027 Forgiveness Sunday falls on 14 March. Below are short Forgiveness Sunday messages, words for asking forgiveness, wishes for family, friends and colleagues, poems and ideas to bring joy to loved ones. Wishes for other holidays of the year are in our holiday wishes calendar.
Happy Forgiveness Sunday! Forgive me if I have hurt you in any way.
May your heart let go of grudges and your soul fill with light. Please forgive me!
Happy Forgiveness Sunday! Peace, love and an easy fast.
Forgive me for anything that went wrong. I value and love you.
How to ask for forgiveness
Traditionally people say: "Please forgive me." The reply is: "God forgives, and so do I."
You can also use your own words: "I am sorry I was harsh back then. You mean a lot to me, and I do not want any grudges between us."
Sincerity matters most. Even a short message from the heart means more than a long speech.
For family and loved ones
Mum and Dad, forgive me for my carelessness and sharp words. Thank you for your patience and love.
My love, forgive me for our little quarrels. You are the most important person in my life.
For friends and colleagues
Friends, happy Forgiveness Sunday! Forgive me if I ever let you down or failed to support you.
Colleagues, forgive me for work disputes and deadline stress. May our team stay close and the fast be easy.
Heartfelt words
Forgiveness is not weakness but strength. Today I let go of all grudges and ask forgiveness of anyone I may have hurt.
May this day be the start of something bright: renewed relationships, warm conversations and heartfelt hugs.
Forgiveness Sunday poems
Forgive me if I've caused you pain, If ever I have spoken wrong; May love and peace return again And make our friendship twice as strong!
On Forgiveness Sunday, from my heart, I ask you now: forgive me, please; Let every grudge and hurt depart And fill our hearts with joy and ease!
Ways to bring joy to loved ones
On Forgiveness Sunday the best gesture is a personal visit or a call. If you want to back up your words, choose a gentle light bouquet: white flowers symbolise purity and a fresh start. And you can bring Mum or Grandma homemade pancakes, the last before the fast.
