A gender reveal party is a celebration where parents-to-be and their loved ones find out together whether the baby is a boy or a girl. The secret is revealed by a cake, a box of balloons, confetti or coloured smoke, and guests place their bets in advance. Here is how to plan a gender reveal at home or outdoors, the best reveal ideas, how to decorate, which games to play and what to give the future mum and dad.
More on this topic: gifts for a pregnant woman, new baby wishes, what to give with flowers.
The tradition began in the United States in the late 2000s and within a few years spread around the world, Ukraine included. The party usually takes place at around 18–22 weeks of pregnancy, when the baby’s sex can already be seen on an ultrasound scan.
The whole point is that nobody knows the result, sometimes not even the parents. The doctor writes the baby’s sex on a card and seals it in an envelope, which is passed to a baker, a florist or a friend who prepares the surprise. Pink traditionally means a girl and blue means a boy.
A gender reveal does not replace a baby shower and is not a must. It is simply a reason to gather your closest people, celebrate together and take a few funny photos to show your child one day.

1. Choose a secret keeper. Ask the doctor not to tell you the result but to write it down and seal it in an envelope. Hand the envelope to whoever prepares the surprise: a baker, a friend or an event planner.
2. Pick the format and venue. Most gender reveals take place at home, on a terrace, in a café or at a picnic. An intimate party for 10–15 guests usually works better than a big one: everyone sees the reveal and has time to chat.
3. Send invitations 2–3 weeks ahead. Include the date, time, address and dress code: guests can wear pink or blue to show their guess.
4. Plan the running order. Welcome and voting, a few games, food, the big moment of the reveal, then toasts and photos. The whole party usually lasts 2–3 hours.
5. Appoint a photographer. The reveal lasts only a few seconds, so ask someone to film it and enjoy the moment yourselves. If you are unsure what cocktail or smart casual means, see dress codes explained.
Cake or cupcakes. The cake looks neutral outside, while the sponge or filling inside is pink or blue. Balloon box. The parents open a big box and helium balloons in the right colour float out. Giant confetti balloon. Pop it with a pin and coloured confetti rains down on everyone.
Confetti poppers. Hand them to several guests and set them off at once. Surprise bouquet. A florist arranges pink or blue flowers in a closed box, and mum opens it in front of everyone. Piñata. A paper figure filled with sweets and confetti in the right colour.
Colour powder. The parents wear white T-shirts and guests throw dry holi powder at them. Puzzle or scratch cards. Guests put a puzzle together or scratch off cards. Coloured smoke. Spectacular in photos, but only use certified smoke candles, well away from dry grass, people and buildings.
Fishing or basketball. Dad shoots a ball into a hoop or “fishes out” a toy in the right colour. A card from an older sibling. The big brother or sister opens the envelope and announces the news. A bottle of bubbly for the guests. The coloured label is hidden under a wrap that everyone removes together.

Colours. The classic choice is pink and blue in equal amounts so you don’t give the secret away. More modern options are dusty pink with sage, peach with mint, or neutral white, beige and gold with small accents of colour.
Decor. A balloon arch or garland, a photo corner with a “Boy or girl?” sign, bouquets in both colours on the tables and a board for guests’ bets. Choose flowers without a strong scent: pregnant women are often sensitive to the smell of lilies and hyacinths.
Food. A buffet works better than a sit-down meal: canapés, mini sandwiches, fruit, cupcakes with frosting in both colours and lemonades. Make sure there are soft drinks and dishes without raw meat, raw fish or unpasteurised cheese for the mum-to-be.
Games. “Team Boy vs Team Girl”, guess the bump size with a ribbon, old wives’ tales (bump shape, salty cravings), guess the due date and birth weight, and whose baby photo is this? Small sweets or candles make good prizes.

Guests usually bring something neutral for the baby — a blanket, a soft toy or a book for the first months — and flowers and a little comfort gift for mum. Helium balloons or a teddy bear fit perfectly both before and after the big reveal.

Usually at 18–22 weeks, when the baby’s sex shows on the scan. Some couples celebrate earlier, after a non-invasive prenatal test.
They are different parties: a gender reveal is about finding out the sex, while a baby shower takes place closer to the birth to give mum things for the baby. You can have both or neither.
Yes. Ask the doctor to seal the result, order a cake or a balloon box and open the surprise together — it makes a lovely, cosy celebration.
Guests often wear pink or blue depending on their guess. White or neutral clothes suit the parents-to-be, as confetti and powder look great against them.
