The Botanical Garden of V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University is the oldest botanical garden in Ukraine, founded in 1804 together with the university. Despite shelling, it is open and each spring begins its season with magnolias, tulips and sakura. Here is what to see, what blooms when, how the garden works now, how to get there by metro and where to take the best photos.
The garden was founded in 1804 alongside Kharkiv University, with collecting starting in 1803. It covers about 42 hectares on two sites: the historic one at 52 Klochkivska Street (5.5 ha), which is open to visitors, and Sarzhyn Yar at 24 Otakara Yarosha Street. Its arboretum is arranged geographically: Europe, the Mediterranean, Siberia, the Far East, North America, China and Japan. For other gardens, see our guide to botanical gardens of Ukraine.
What to see
The collection holds over 8,500 species and varieties, 95 of them in Ukraine’s Red Book. Highlights are magnolias (over 60 taxa), tulips (almost 70 species and over 300 varieties), tree peonies, rhododendrons, irises and lilies. The glasshouses hold about 3,000 tropical taxa, including some 900 cactus species and a date palm almost a century old. Sakura trees were planted in 2024.
Scientifically the garden has four departments, each with something to show:
Tropical and subtropical plants — about 3,000 taxa under glass, including some 900 cactus species and a date palm almost a century old.
Native flora — plants of Ukraine, including 95 Red Book species.
Dendrology — an arboretum arranged by geography: Europe, the Mediterranean, Siberia, the Far East, North America, China and Japan; over 60 magnolia taxa.
Flowering ornamentals — almost 70 species and over 300 cultivars of tulips, tree peonies with 20–30 cm flowers, rhododendrons, irises and lilies.
In total the collection exceeds 8,500 species and cultivars — one of the largest university collections in Ukraine.
What is in bloom at Kharkiv Botanical Garden: month by month
The calendar is approximate: dates shift by 1–2 weeks each year with the weather, and the garden posts bloom news on its own pages.
Early April: scillas, chionodoxas, forsythia; magnolias open the season — the garden has over 60 taxa.
April: tulips (almost 70 species and over 300 cultivars), rhododendrons.
Late April: sakura planted in 2024 and the first irises.
May: tree peonies — usually from the first ten days of the month, lasting 2–3 weeks — and irises. You can grow one at home too: tree peonies.
June–July: lilies and summer beds.
September–October: autumn colour across the geographic sections of the arboretum.
Winter: the greenhouse collections, when the greenhouses are open (technical breaks are possible).
Kharkiv Botanical Garden opening hours now (2026)
The garden has been hit by the war: in 2022 its collections took direct strikes, and in 2025 a drone destroyed the greenhouse. Even so, it is open and starts a new season every spring. After 2022 botanical gardens from many countries sent seeds to Kharkiv in support.
Spring–summer schedule (from 1 May 2026): Wednesday and Friday 9:00–16:00, Saturday and Sunday 10:00–18:00.
Visitor area: the historic site at 52 Klochkivska St.
Entry: paid; check the current price on the garden’s pages before you go.
Greenhouses: technical breaks are possible — the garden announces them on social media.
Tours, photo shoots and workshops: by prior booking only, on weekdays.
Check the security situation in the city before you set off.
Getting there: Botanichnyi Sad metro and address
Visitors are admitted at 52 Klochkivska St. The garden’s second site is in Sarzhyn Yar at 24 Otakara Yarosha St.
Metro: the nearest station is Botanichnyi Sad on the Oleksiivska (green) line, named after the garden. From the exit turn right towards the Lito shopping centre.
Neighbouring station — Naukova, a slightly longer walk.
Taxi: give 52 Klochkivska St — that is the visitor entrance.
What visitors value most
Kharkiv city guides and local media most often mention:
Spring bloom — magnolias and tulips that draw residents to the season opening.
An arboretum “by continent” — sections for Europe, the Mediterranean, Siberia, the Far East, North America, China and Japan.
History — Ukraine’s oldest botanical garden, founded in 1804.
Resilience — the garden keeps recovering from shelling and welcoming visitors, which many see as a symbol of the city.
Calm next to the metro — a quiet green space a few minutes from the station.
The most common tip is to check the schedule first: the garden is not open every day, and tours and shoots need booking.
