March is the first month of spring: nature wakes up and florists fill with tulips, mimosa and daffodils for March 8. March's birth flower is the daffodil, a symbol of rebirth and new beginnings. Here's what the daffodil means, what blooms in March in the garden and at home, and which bouquet to give someone born in March. Next month: April flowers.
Approximate for Kyiv and central Ukraine; in a warm spring everything blooms earlier.
March birth flower: the daffodil
The daffodil is March's flower and one of the first symbols of spring. It means rebirth, new beginnings and hope, and its yellow colour brings joy and warmth. In many countries daffodils are given to wish success in a new venture. We covered varieties, planting and daffodils in bouquets in daffodils guide.
Note: daffodils release a slime that harms other flowers, so they are conditioned separately in water for a few hours before being mixed. The full list by month is in birth month flowers.
What blooms in March
Early March brings squills, crocuses and snowdrops; mid-March, daffodils, hyacinths and fritillaries; late March, early tulips and golden forsythia. To identify the first blooms, see first spring flowers, and for growing crocuses in pots, see crocus in a pot.
A bouquet for March birthdays
March birthdays suit sunny yellow-and-white bouquets: daffodils, tulips, mimosa and yellow roses. If daffodils aren't available, yellow tulips or roses with white flowers carry the same mood. March 8 falls early in the month; see flowers for March 8 for ideas.
March zodiac signs
March is shared by Pisces (until March 20) and Aries (from March 21). Pisces get soft pastel flowers such as lilac roses, lisianthus and orchids; Aries get bold, bright ones: red roses, gerberas and tulips. A zodiac bouquet nicely complements the month's flower.
