Seasonal Flowers by Month: A Bouquet Calendar for Ukraine

Seasonal flowers are the freshest and best value: they do not travel far, last longer and capture the mood of the season. Here is a month-by-month seasonal flower calendar for Ukraine and tips on which bouquets to choose in spring, summer, autumn and winter.

Why choose seasonal flowers

• Freshness. Local in-season flowers are recently cut and skip long supply chains.
• Price. At peak season flowers are plentiful and more affordable.
• Mood. Tulips in spring, peonies in June, asters in September — an in-season bouquet looks natural.
• Sustainability. Fewer flights and heated greenhouses mean a smaller carbon footprint.

Thanks to imports from Kenya, Ecuador, Colombia and the Netherlands, roses, chrysanthemums, alstroemeria and carnations are available all year — a good base for seasonal accents.

Spring

Spring is bulb season: tulips, daffodils, hyacinths and grape hyacinths, plus mimosa for 8 March. April brings ranunculus and anemones, May lilac, lily of the valley and the first peonies. More in early spring flowers and flowers to give in May.

Summer

Autumn

September brings asters and dahlias; October and November chrysanthemums in every shade, physalis, berries and grasses for warm harvest bouquets. What blooms then: October flowering plants.

Winter

In winter, bouquets are built on imported roses, lisianthus and chrysanthemums, with seasonal accents of conifer, pine cones, hypericum and holly berries and cotton. Potted plants include poinsettias, hippeastrum and hyacinths forced for the holidays.

Making seasonal bouquets last

• Put spring bulbs in shallow, cool water; keep daffodils apart from other flowers for the first day.
• Cut summer flowers in the morning and put them straight into water; change it daily in hot weather.
• Autumn chrysanthemums and asters are the hardiest: 2–3 weeks with fresh water.
• In winter, protect flowers from frost during transport.
