A New Year arrangement of fresh flowers and evergreens sets the festive mood as well as a tree does. It can be a table centrepiece, a door wreath or a gift instead of a classic bouquet. Here is which flowers and materials suit winter arrangements, which formats to choose and how to make a simple arrangement yourself.

Ready-made festive options: flower baskets and flowers in a box.

Popular formats

  • Table centrepiece — low enough not to block conversation, often with candles.
  • Door or wall wreath — a vine or foam base with evergreens, cones and ribbon.
  • Winter bouquet — roses with evergreens, eucalyptus and hypericum berries.
  • Basket — a generous gift for a family or team.
  • Ikebana — a minimalist Japanese approach: a few branches and flowers with plenty of space. In Japanese New Year tradition, pine symbolises longevity.

A simple table arrangement

  • Soak floral foam by floating it on water and letting it sink by itself.
  • Place it in a low container or tray.
  • Insert evergreen sprigs all around to hide the foam.
  • Add 3–5 focal flowers, berries and wired cones.
  • If you want candles, use candle holders and position them so the flame cannot touch the greenery.

Safety and care

  • Never leave lit candles unattended — evergreens dry out and catch fire easily.
  • Top up the foam with water every 1–2 days.
  • Keep the arrangement away from radiators.
  • Poinsettia and holly can irritate pets — keep them out of reach of cats and dogs.

FAQ

Which evergreen lasts longest?

Fir holds its needles for a long time. Pine is also sturdy, while spruce drops needles faster in a warm room.

When should I make it?

One to three days before the celebration, so the flowers are at their best on New Year’s Eve.
