HydrangeasShrubs are the backbone of a garden. They hold their shape when perennials have not yet woken up or have finished flowering, and they add volume, shade and shelter for birds. Chosen season by season, they keep a garden interesting twelve months a year. Below are reliable ornamental shrubs for Ukraine's climate, a calendar of their best moments and tips on planting and pruning.
Spring: first colour
- Forsythia — yellow flowers on bare branches in March–April, one of the earliest.
- Bridal wreath spiraea (Spiraea × vanhouttei) — white cascades in May; prune straight after flowering.
- Lilac — fragrant panicles in May, in white, lilac, purple and double forms.
- Weigela — bell-shaped pink and red flowers in May–June, often repeating.
Summer: peak flowering
- Mock orange (Philadelphus) — fragrant white flowers in June.
- Panicle and smooth hydrangeas — large flower heads from July into autumn; hardy and easy.
- Buddleja — lilac spikes that attract butterflies; may be damaged in cold winters but regrows quickly.
- Shrubby potentilla — flowers from June until the frosts.
- Rose of Sharon (Hibiscus syriacus) — tropical-looking flowers in August–September; does best in central and southern Ukraine.
Autumn: foliage and berries

- Japanese barberry — foliage from yellow-orange to burgundy, with red berries lasting into winter.
- Guelder rose (Viburnum opulus) — white flower heads in spring and red berry clusters in autumn that feed birds.
- Ninebark — burgundy- and gold-leaved varieties look good all season.
Winter: structure and coloured stems
- Red-barked dogwood — bright red stems are especially striking against snow.
- Witch hazel — a rare shrub that flowers in winter or early spring with spidery yellow-orange blooms.

Planting and care
- Timing. Container-grown shrubs can be planted all season; bare-root plants in early spring or September–October.
- Spacing. Allow for the mature size: most shrubs need 1–2 m so they don't crowd their neighbours.
- Prune by flowering time. Spring bloomers on last year's wood (forsythia, bridal wreath spiraea, lilac, mock orange) are pruned straight after flowering. Summer bloomers on new growth (panicle hydrangea, buddleja, potentilla) are pruned in early spring.
- Mulch. A 5–7 cm layer around the shrub keeps moisture in and weeds down — a key technique of the low-maintenance garden.
