Roman’s name day under the new church calendar of the OCU and UGCC is celebrated on 1 October; under the old style it is 14 October. The day honours Saint Romanos the Melodist, a Byzantine author of church hymns. 1 October is also the Feast of the Protection of the Theotokos (Pokrova) and the Day of Defenders of Ukraine, so men named Roman celebrate a double — or even triple — holiday. Below are short name day wishes for Roman, wishes in your own words, messages for a husband, dad, son, friend or colleague, and poems.
Holidays on this day: Pokrova wishes and Defenders Day wishes; other name days — name day wishes.
The name Roman comes from the Latin for “Roman”, and his patron saint was a hymn writer, so wishing inspiration and harmony fits well. And since the name day coincides with Defenders Day, you can thank him for his courage. For example: “Roma, happy name day! You always know how to support and inspire. May Saint Romanos protect you and may your life sound like the best melody.”
Happy name day, Roman dear!
May Pokrova keep you near,
May life be kind in every way
And joy come knocking every day!
Roman — singer, Roman — poet,
May your life be bright, and show it,
May each day bring a dream that’s new
And a song of spring for you!
Saint Romanos the Melodist lived in Constantinople in the 6th century and wrote hundreds of church hymns — kontakia, some of which are still sung today. After the switch to the new calendar, his feast coincided with Pokrova and the Day of Defenders of Ukraine on 1 October.
Roman comes from the Latin romanus, “a Roman”, “a citizen of Rome”. In our history it was borne by Prince Roman Mstyslavych, who united the principalities of Halych and Volhynia. The name also sounds like the word for “novel”, so the greeting can be a little romantic:
A living plant that lasts a long time or an arrangement of flowers and sweets makes a great gift for a man.
