Trachelium is a flower people often see in bouquets but rarely know by name. Its dense, flat heads of hundreds of tiny flowers look like fluffy clouds in lilac, purple, white or wine red. Florists use it to add volume and soft texture to an arrangement. Here is what the plant is and how to work with it.

What Is Trachelium

Trachelium caeruleum, or throatwort, belongs to the bellflower family and comes from the western Mediterranean — southern Spain and Portugal and North Africa. In the wild it is a perennial growing on damp rocks and old walls. Stems 60–90 cm tall end in flat domed heads 8–15 cm across. Each tiny flower is tubular with a long protruding style, and these styles are what make the head look fluffy.

Trachelium Colours

  • Lilac and lavender — the classic, closest to the wild form.
  • Deep purple — adds depth to berry and autumn bouquets.
  • White — a soft filler for wedding designs.
  • Wine and pink — goes with burgundy roses and peonies.

Trachelium in Bouquets

Trachelium fills the space between big blooms like a cloud and adds volume without extra greenery. It pairs beautifully with roses, lisianthus, hydrangea and alstroemeria, and the lilac form with waxflower and eucalyptus. A few stems on their own look like a lavender field. More fillers are in flowers and greenery for bouquets.

How Long Trachelium Lasts in a Vase

With proper care, 7–10 days. Strip the lower leaves, cut the stems at an angle and place them in water with flower food. Trachelium dislikes water on its flower heads, so do not mist it. Change the water every 2–3 days.

How to Grow Trachelium

In Ukraine trachelium is grown as an annual. The seed is tiny and needs light to germinate: sow in February on the surface of the compost without covering, at 18–20 °C. Plant out after the frosts in a sunny spot with light, well-drained soil. It flowers from midsummer; for cutting, pick stems when about half the flowers in a head are open.
