Peony season in Ukraine is short, which is why everyone waits for it: lush, fragrant blooms appear in gardens in late spring and last only a few weeks. Here’s when peonies bloom in different regions, the order in which tree, herbaceous and Itoh peonies flower, how long one plant blooms, when to expect the first flowers after planting and how to extend the season.

More on this topic: peonies: types, varieties, meaning, why peonies don’t bloom, tree peony.

When peonies bloom in Ukraine

  • The main peony season runs from mid-May to late June; in Kyiv and central Ukraine the peak is usually late May to mid-June.
  • In the south (Odesa, Kherson, Mykolaiv) peonies open 1–2 weeks earlier; in Polissia, the Carpathians and the west, later.
  • Exact dates shift every year: a warm spring brings blooms forward, a cold, wet one delays them.

Bloom order: which peonies flower first

  • Tree peonies open the season in late April or early May; see our tree peony guide.
  • The fern-leaf peony, with bright red flowers and lacy foliage, blooms in early May; in the wild it is rare and protected.
  • Early herbaceous hybrids such as Coral Charm and Red Charm open in mid-May.
  • Lactiflora peonies, the classic garden kind such as Sarah Bernhardt, and Itoh hybrids bloom from late May to mid-June.
  • Late varieties finish the season at the end of June. Planting early, mid and late varieties gives 6–7 weeks of bloom.

How long peonies bloom

  • A herbaceous peony plant blooms for 2–3 weeks, each flower for 7–10 days.
  • Heat shortens flowering; cool weather extends it.
  • Cut peonies last 5–7 days in a vase, or up to 10 if cut at the soft-bud stage; see peonies in a vase.

When new peonies first bloom

  • Herbaceous peonies usually bloom 2–3 years after planting, tree peonies after 3–5 years.
  • Remove buds in the first year so the plant puts its energy into the roots.
  • The commonest reasons a mature plant won’t flower are planting too deep, shade, excess nitrogen and an old clump that needs dividing.

How to extend peony season

  • Plant early, mid and late varieties.
  • Water generously while buds form; dry soil means smaller flowers.
  • Add supports before flowering so heavy blooms don’t flop after rain.
  • Cut a few soft buds and keep them wrapped in paper in the fridge for up to two weeks.

When to buy peonies

  • Local peonies reach flower shops in May–June, when the choice is widest.
  • Out of season, imported peonies are available but scarcer and pricier.
  • Year-round, garden roses offer a similar look: full, fragrant and long-lasting.

When peonies are out of season

Garden roses resemble peonies in fullness and scent but are available all year. We add a sachet of flower food to every bouquet.
