A dress code tells guests how to dress for an event: a wedding, a corporate party, a celebration or a business meeting. Invitations often state it in a few words — black tie, cocktail, smart casual — and these are exactly the words that raise questions. Here is what each dress code means, how to dress for a wedding or a themed party and what to do when the invitation says nothing at all.

The term comes from British clubs and society receptions, where guests were expected to wear particular clothes. Today dress codes exist in offices, restaurants, theatres and at private celebrations.
Spelling. In English both “dress code” and “dresscode” appear, but the two-word form is standard. In Ukrainian the correct spelling is “дрес-код” (hyphen, single “с”), and in Russian it is “дресс-код”.
A dress code is less about restriction and more about respect for the hosts and comfort for the guests: when everyone dresses in the same spirit, nobody feels out of place and the photos look harmonious. For more party planning guides, see how to plan a party.
In English it is written as two words, dress code (sometimes hyphenated as an adjective: “dress-code rules”). In Ukrainian the correct form is “дрес-код” with a single “с” and a hyphen; Russian uses “дресс-код”. It means a set of rules on what to wear for a particular event, venue or workplace.
White tie is the most formal: a tailcoat with a white bow tie for men, a floor-length evening gown, gloves and jewellery for women. You will see it at state receptions, balls and opera premieres.
Black tie means evening wear: a dinner jacket with a black bow tie, and a long evening dress or an elegant suit for women. Black tie optional gives a choice: a tuxedo or a dark suit and tie, a floor-length or a smart midi dress.
Cocktail means a suit with an optional tie, a knee-length or midi dress, heels and statement accessories. It is the most common dress code for weddings, milestone birthdays and corporate parties.
Business means a classic suit, a shirt and closed shoes, or a trouser suit, sheath dress or skirt and blouse. Smart casual is neat without a suit: chinos, a shirt or jumper, loafers or a shirt dress. Casual is everyday wear, as long as it is clean and suits the venue.

| Dress code | Men | Women |
|---|---|---|
| White tie | Tailcoat, white waistcoat and bow tie, patent shoes | Floor-length gown, long gloves, fine jewellery |
| Black tie | Tuxedo, black bow tie, white shirt | Floor-length evening gown or a very elegant midi |
| Black tie optional | Tuxedo or dark suit and tie | Floor-length or dressy cocktail dress |
| Cocktail | Suit, tie optional | Knee-length or midi cocktail dress, heels |
| Smart elegant | Suit or blazer with trousers, no trainers | Dress, suit or blouse and skirt, smart shoes |
| Business casual | Chinos, shirt, blazer without tie, loafers | Trousers or skirt, blouse, jacket, closed shoes |
| Smart casual | Dark jeans or chinos, shirt or polo, blazer | Jeans or skirt, blouse, jacket, trainers or flats |
| Casual | Neat everyday clothes | Neat everyday clothes |
Business casual is office wear without the strictness of a suit: a blazer with chinos or contrasting trousers, no tie required, jumpers, loafers and moccasins allowed. Sportswear, shorts, flip-flops and slogan T-shirts are out. Smart elegant is a step dressier and often appears on invitations to milestone birthdays, evening receptions and restaurant celebrations: a suit or blazer, trousers and shirt for men; a dress, jumpsuit or tailored suit with good shoes for women. Unlike cocktail, smart elegant allows stylish trouser looks as well as dresses.

If the invitation includes a colour palette, follow it — the couple has thought about how the guests will look in photos. If not, go for cocktail style: a midi dress or a suit and comfortable shoes for dancing.
What to avoid. White and ivory, which belong to the bride; overly revealing outfits; and bare shoulders or short skirts at a church ceremony without a cover-up. All-black is fine for an evening wedding today, but lighter colours suit a daytime one better.
Guests often bring flowers: to choose a bouquet that matches the style of the day, see wedding flowers from guests. For how to state a dress code in your wording, see wedding invitation wording.
Casino night. Think Las Vegas or a spy film: a tuxedo or a dark suit with a bow tie, a waistcoat or braces for men; a satin or sequinned dress in red, black or gold, gloves, feathers and bold lipstick for women. Playing-card and chip accessories add fun.
90s party. Mom jeans, windbreakers, caps, bright jumpers, chokers and platform trainers. Gatsby and the 1920s. Fringed flapper dresses, feathered headbands and strings of pearls; three-piece suits, braces and a hat for men.
White party. Every guest wears white or ivory — striking on a summer terrace or by the water. Colour dress codes are common at gender reveals, birthdays and weddings: guests are asked to wear certain shades so the photos look cohesive. A casino party — Las Vegas, Monte Carlo or spy-film chic — is one of the most popular themes for birthdays, office parties and proms. The key colours are black, red, gold and green, like the felt of gaming tables.
Check the level of formality first: “Monte Carlo” usually means near black tie, while “Las Vegas” allows bolder, playful looks.

More and more invitations specify a colour rather than a style: “all white”, “total black”, “pastels”, “earth tones” or “wedding colours: sage and blush”. These are easy to meet from your wardrobe and make for harmonious photos. If a colour does not suit you, use it as an accent — tie, scarf, bag or shoes — rather than head to toe. At a colour-coded wedding avoid any shade reserved for the bride or bridesmaids.
Children’s parties usually have a theme (pirates, princesses, superheroes) — the costume should be easy to play and eat in. For a school prom boys can wear a suit or trousers with a shirt and jacket; girls a dress they can dance in and low heels. If the adults’ invitation says black tie or cocktail, smart but simple party clothes are enough for children.
Companies usually set their dress code in internal policies. The most common are business (strict formal wear — banks and law firms), business casual (most offices) and smart casual (IT, creative agencies). Typical rules: neat, clean clothes, closed shoes, understated make-up and accessories, no sportswear or beachwear. For client meetings and negotiations dress one level more formally than usual. Fridays are often “casual Friday” — jeans are fine, ripped ones are not.

If you are going to a wedding or a milestone birthday, your bouquet can follow the dress code too: roses or peony roses in a restrained palette suit an evening event, while light, garden-style arrangements suit a summer party. Choose flowers that are easy to carry all evening.

In English, the two-word “dress code” is standard. In Ukrainian it is “дрес-код”, in Russian “дресс-код”.
Go by the venue and time of day: an evening at a restaurant calls for cocktail style, a day outdoors for smart casual. It is better to be slightly overdressed than underdressed.
Yes, if they are dark, unripped jeans worn with a shirt or blazer and smart shoes.
A Las Vegas-style theme: a tuxedo or a suit with a bow tie, evening dresses in red, black and gold, and playing-card accessories.
Women: an evening or cocktail dress in red, black or gold with some sparkle and gloves. Men: a tuxedo or dark suit with a bow tie and waistcoat.
“Дрес-код” — one “с” and a hyphen; “дресс-код” is the Russian spelling.
