For a little girl, her own bouquet is an event: she feels grown-up and like a real princess. But a child’s bouquet differs from an adult’s — it should be light, safe and cheerful. Here is which flowers to give a girl for her birthday, a performance or the first day of school, and which options delight most. Ideas for other people and occasions are in our guide what to give: gift ideas.
Ages 3–6: a mini bouquet of 3–5 gerberas or spray roses, a “flower toy” — a bear or bunny made of chrysanthemums, or a bouquet with a soft toy. Keep it light and thorn-free.
Ages 7–10: a bright bouquet in a box or basket, flowers with a balloon, a sweet bouquet with candy and a few flowers.
Ages 11–14: an “almost grown-up” bouquet — peony roses, lisianthus, pastel tulips in stylish wrapping without excess bows; girls this age love being treated like adults.

Which colours to choose
Little girls usually love bright, “fairy-tale” shades: pink, fuchsia, sunny yellow, lilac. White and cream suit formal events — a first communion, a performance, a nursery graduation. Dark burgundy and purple don’t flatter children’s bouquets, so save them for adults. If you know her favourite colour, that’s the best guide.
Occasions
Birthday — a bright bouquet or a flower toy.
Performance or concert — a small bouquet that is easy to present on stage.
First day of school — a neat medium-sized bouquet.
Children love bright, happy colours — pink, yellow, orange. If you know her favourite colour, go with that.
Which potted plant suits a child?
An easy, safe one such as an African violet or spider plant; consider whether there are toddlers or pets at home.
