June brings the start of summer, graduations, weddings and the longest days of the year. Roses, peonies and jasmine bloom, and gardens smell their sweetest. June’s birth flower is the rose, queen of flowers, with honeysuckle as the second. Here’s what they mean, what blooms in June and which bouquet to give someone born in June. Next month: July flowers.

June's two birth flowers and their meanings.

June birth flowers: rose and honeysuckle

  • The rose is June’s flower and the best-known symbol of love. Its meaning depends on colour: red for passion, white for purity and new beginnings, pink for tenderness and gratitude, yellow for joy and friendship. June is peak season for garden roses, making them especially fitting. Everything about varieties and symbolism is in our roses guide.
  • June’s second flower is honeysuckle, a fragrant climber symbolising devotion, connection and happy love. It’s rarely used in bouquets but adorns arbours and fences. Other months are listed in birth month flowers.

Rose colour meanings and honeysuckle symbolism

  • Red roses — passionate love and admiration.
  • White — purity and new beginnings; a wedding classic.
  • Pink — tenderness, gratitude and affection.
  • Yellow — friendship and joy (not “parting”, as is sometimes thought).
  • Orange and coral — enthusiasm and desire.
  • Burgundy — deep, mature feelings.

Honey-scented honeysuckle symbolises a tender bond and devotion — fittingly, its twining stems wrap around garden arbours. Find more meanings in our article on the language of flowers.

What blooms in June

  • June brings roses, peonies, mock orange, irises, lavender, bellflowers, hollyhocks, daisies and cornflowers. It’s also the last month of peony season; see peonies guide. Summer bouquet flowers and their seasons are in summer flowers.

A bouquet for June birthdays

  • For June birthdays, a rose bouquet is the best fit: classic, garden or spray roses. Choose the colour by personality and occasion: soft pink and cream for mum or a friend, red for a loved one, yellow for friends. Roses look gorgeous with peonies or hydrangeas while they’re in season.

June zodiac signs

  • June is shared by Gemini (until June 21) and Cancer (from June 22). Variety-loving Gemini enjoy bright mixed bouquets, while sensitive Cancer prefers soft white and cream flowers: roses, lilies and hydrangeas.

Keeping roses fresh in June heat

In June, roses last 7–10 days in a vase if you help them through the heat. Cut the stems at an angle under water with a sharp knife, remove leaves below the waterline, use cool water and change it daily. Keep the vase out of direct sun and away from air conditioning, and move it somewhere cooler overnight. Dissolve the flower-food sachet in the water to extend vase life.
