A large bouquet is a gesture no one can miss: 51 or 101 roses, an armful of peonies or a lavish mixed arrangement. But a showstopping gift has a practical side: weight, delivery, a vase and care. Here is when a large bouquet is appropriate, the options available and how to make sure it delights rather than inconveniences.

Large bouquets are available among our large rose bouquets and 101-rose bouquets.

When to give a large bouquet

  • A proposal or an anniversary.
  • A milestone birthday, a new baby, an important win.
  • An apology or declaration, when you want to show you are serious.
  • A celebration where the bouquet becomes part of the decor.

Types of large bouquets

  • A single-variety rose bouquet — 51, 101 or more; see how a 101-rose bouquet is made.
  • An armful — long-stemmed peonies, tulips or spray roses gathered loosely.
  • A lavish mixed bouquet — roses, hydrangeas, lisianthus and textured greenery.
  • A large box or basket arrangement — nothing to hold and no vase to find.

For choosing a shape, see bouquet shapes.

Weight, presentation, vase and care for large bouquets

A large bouquet of long-stemmed roses can weigh several kilograms, so it is best delivered to the home or presented where it will not need to be carried far. For a restaurant surprise, arrange for it to be brought out at the end of the evening and help carry it to the car.

Vase and care

A large bouquet needs a wide, stable vase about half the stem height — or a clean bucket. It is easiest to carefully split it between 2–3 vases so the flowers drink better and last longer. How to choose a vase: see flower vases.

  • Change the water every other day and recut the stems.
  • Remove leaves below the waterline.
  • Keep the bouquet cool, away from radiators and sun.

Large bouquet etiquette

  • Check whether the recipient has space and a vase — or choose a box arrangement.
  • Avoid a huge bouquet if they face a long walk or public transport.
  • Size is no substitute for thought: add a card with a few sincere words.
