In 2027, Orthodox Easter in Ukraine falls on 2 May and Western (Catholic) Easter on 28 March, five weeks apart. Below are Easter dates for the next few years, the other movable feasts of 2027 (Palm Sunday, Trinity, Radonitsa) and why the date changes every year even after the Ukrainian churches adopted the new calendar.

Orthodox Easter 2027 (OCU, UGCC and other Eastern churches) is on Sunday 2 May. Western Easter is on Sunday 28 March. So in 2027 the two are celebrated separately, with the widest gap of the next few years.
Under martial law, at the time of writing, Ukraine grants no extra days off for religious holidays, so Easter and Trinity are ordinary Sundays.
Since 1 September 2023 the OCU and UGCC have followed the Revised Julian calendar: Christmas is on 25 December and fixed feasts moved by 13 days. Easter, however, is still calculated with the old paschal tables, so Orthodox Easter falls on the same Sunday as before. Movable feasts such as Palm Sunday, Ascension and Trinity are counted from Easter and did not change either.
The rule goes back to the Council of Nicaea: Easter is the first Sunday after the first full moon following the spring equinox. Catholics use the Gregorian calendar and the Orthodox the Julian one, so the dates coincide only some years. Orthodox Easter always falls between 4 April and 8 May (Gregorian), Western Easter between 22 March and 25 April.
Great Lent 2027 begins on 15 March and lasts until Easter. Palm Sunday is 25 April and Holy Thursday 29 April. After Easter: Thomas Sunday on 9 May, Radonitsa (remembrance day) on 11 May, Ascension on 10 June and Trinity on 20 June. For Western Christians, Ash Wednesday is 10 February and Palm Sunday 21 March.
Start preparing early: willow twigs are blessed on Palm Sunday, and paska is baked for Easter; see our paska recipe.
Spring flowers suit Easter: tulips, hyacinths, daffodils and soft roses. A white and yellow bouquet or a boxed arrangement completes the festive table or a family visit.
