World Theatre Day is celebrated every year on 27 March. It was founded by the International Theatre Institute in 1961 and first marked in 1962; since then a leading artist writes an international message each year, the first by Jean Cocteau. On this day we greet actors, directors, set and costume designers, make-up artists, lighting crews and everyone who creates the magic of the stage. Below are short Theatre Day wishes, messages for actors and the company, words from the audience, poems and tips on which flowers to give after a show.
Happy World Theatre Day! Full houses, applause and the roles you dream of.
Congratulations on your professional holiday! May the stage inspire you and audiences love you.
Happy 27 March! May every premiere be a triumph.
Thank you for the magic you create on stage. Happy holiday!
For actors and the company
Dear actors, may every entrance feel like the first, full of nerves and joy. Break a leg!
Congratulations to the whole company and everyone backstage: directors, costume and make-up teams, lighting and sound. Without you there would be no magic!

Funny wishes
May the prompter stay silent because you know every line by heart!
May the only drama in your life be on stage. Happy World Theatre Day!
Theatre Day poems
The curtain rises, slow and bright, The hall falls silent, hushed and still; May every show be pure delight And every bow the audience thrill!
You play our fates, our love, our pain, You bring us tears and laughter too; May full houses come again and again And flowers rain down just for you!
Which flowers to give an actor
Giving flowers after a show is an old theatre tradition: they are presented at the curtain call or sent backstage. Choose bright, striking bouquets that stand out from the stage, such as red roses or bold contrasting arrangements. Male actors receive more restrained bouquets, and on Theatre Day you can congratulate the whole company with a basket of flowers or sweets.
