World Theatre Day is celebrated every year on 27 March. It was founded by the International Theatre Institute in 1961 and first marked in 1962; since then a leading artist writes an international message each year, the first by Jean Cocteau. On this day we greet actors, directors, set and costume designers, make-up artists, lighting crews and everyone who creates the magic of the stage. Below are short Theatre Day wishes, messages for actors and the company, words from the audience, poems and tips on which flowers to give after a show. Other professional dates for the year are in our calendar of professional holidays in Ukraine.
Happy World Theatre Day! Full houses, applause and the roles you dream of.
Congratulations on your professional holiday! May the stage inspire you and audiences love you.
Happy 27 March! May every premiere be a triumph.
Thank you for the magic you create on stage. Happy holiday!
For actors and the company
Dear actors, may every entrance feel like the first, full of nerves and joy. Break a leg!
Congratulations to the whole company and everyone backstage: directors, costume and make-up teams, lighting and sound. Without you there would be no magic!
From the audience
Thank you for performances that make us want to live, love and believe. You make the world better.
Special thanks to Ukrainian theatres playing in shelters and at the front. Your art is a weapon too.
Formal wishes
Dear theatre artists, please accept our sincere congratulations on World Theatre Day. Your art preserves culture, unites people and gives strength in the hardest times.
We wish you inspiration, brilliant premieres, grateful audiences and peace.
Funny wishes
May the prompter stay silent because you know every line by heart!
May the only drama in your life be on stage. Happy World Theatre Day!
How to celebrate with the team
Thanks and certificates — recognise everyone's contribution, even with a few words at a team meeting.
Morning flowers for the office — a bouquet for the team or small arrangements on each desk set a festive mood.
A team photo — take a group picture to hang in the office or post on the website.
A wishes board — everyone leaves a few kind words for colleagues on sticky notes.
An informal get-together — lunch, a picnic or a board-game evening after work.
Toasts for the team celebration
Colleagues, here's to our profession! May our work bring not only a salary but also pride in what we do.
A toast to a team that isn't afraid of deadlines, inspections or Mondays. Cheers!
To the experience of those who've been here for years and the energy of those who've just joined. Together we're strong!
Here's to celebrating next year's professional holiday with new achievements and the same wonderful team!
What to write on a card with flowers
Happy birthday! May this bouquet remind you how many people love you.
For the best moments of the year — flowers, sincere words and hugs.
May every day be as bright as this bouquet.
Happy birthday! Wishing you health, peace and joy in the little things.
Sign the card by hand: even two lines in your handwriting mean more than a long printed message.
Theatre Day poems
The curtain rises, slow and bright, The hall falls silent, hushed and still; May every show be pure delight And every bow the audience thrill!
You play our fates, our love, our pain, You bring us tears and laughter too; May full houses come again and again And flowers rain down just for you!
Which flowers to give an actor
Giving flowers after a show is an old theatre tradition: they are presented at the curtain call or sent backstage. Choose bright, striking bouquets that stand out from the stage, such as red roses or bold contrasting arrangements. Male actors receive more restrained bouquets, and on Theatre Day you can congratulate the whole company with a basket of flowers or sweets.
