Anna’s name day under the new church calendar of the OCU and UGCC is celebrated twice: on 25 July — the Dormition of Saint Anna (7 August under the old style), and on 9 December — the Conception of the Theotokos by Saint Anna (22 December under the old style). Saint Anna is the mother of the Virgin Mary and the grandmother of Jesus Christ. Below are short name day wishes for Anna, wishes in your own words, messages for a friend, mom, grandma or colleague, and poems.
More collections: name day wishes and Mariia’s name day; for a feast linked to Saint Anna’s family see Nativity of the Theotokos wishes.
The name Anna comes from the Hebrew for “grace”, so wishing light, harmony and the love of her family fits well. Add a personal detail. For example: “Ania, happy name day! It always feels warm and homely around you. May Saint Anna protect you and your family, and may every day bring small joys.”
Happy name day, Anna dear!
May joy and laughter fill your year,
May life bloom bright in every way
And angels guard you night and day!
Saint Anna, mother, grandmother too,
May she protect your family and you.
May every day be bright and kind
With happiness and peace of mind!
The righteous Joachim and Anna had no children for a long time and prayed for a child. Their daughter became the Virgin Mary, so Saint Anna is honoured as the patroness of mothers, expectant mothers and grandmothers. In Ukraine, Anna’s winter feast was traditionally called “the conception of winter”.
Light, tender bouquets suit Anna — white roses or soft pastel arrangements. They are fitting for a mom and a grandma alike.
