Flowers are the clearest sign of attention, yet choosing a bouquet for a girlfriend can be tricky: you want it to suit the occasion, her taste and how close you are. Here is which flowers suit each stage of a relationship, how to find out what she likes and which mistakes to avoid.

Ready-made bouquets: peony-style roses, red roses and flowers for a friend.

Choosing flowers by relationship stage
  • First date — a small, light bouquet: tulips, spray roses, lisianthus. A huge bouquet can be awkward, especially if you are going for a walk.
  • An established relationship — her favourite flowers and colours; peonies and peony-style roses almost always delight.
  • Anniversary or declaration — classic red roses or a striking flower box.
  • Just because — seasonal flowers or a single stem with a note: surprise matters more than size.

How to find out what she likes

  • Notice which flowers she photographs or likes on social media.
  • Ask her friend or her mum.
  • Look at her style: soft pastels or bold, bright colours.
  • If unsure, choose neutral light shades: white, cream, soft pink.

What colour says

Red roses traditionally mean love and passion, pink ones tenderness and affection, white sincerity and yellow joy and friendship. But colour meaning is tradition, not a rule — her favourite colour matters more. More in Rose colour meanings and The language of flowers.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Giving flowers she is allergic to — for example, strongly scented lilies if she is sensitive.
  • Bringing a huge bouquet somewhere with nowhere to put it: the cinema, a restaurant or a walk.
  • Giving flowers instead of talking after an argument — see How to apologise with flowers.
  • Forgetting the card: a few warm words make a bouquet personal.

FAQ

How many flowers should be in the bouquet?

The number does not really matter: a small bouquet of 5–9 stems is almost always right. For single-stem ideas see Single-flower bouquet.

What should I give on Valentine’s Day?

Red roses are the classic, but her favourite flowers work too. More ideas in Valentine’s gift ideas for her.
