July is the heart of summer: heat, holidays, lavender fields and hydrangeas in full bloom. July’s birth flowers, the delphinium (larkspur) and the water lily, are light and airy like summer itself. Here’s what they mean, what blooms in July, which bouquet to give someone born in July and how to keep it fresh in the heat. Next month: August flowers. Learn more in how to make a bouquet last longer. Another blue summer flower is delphinium: how to grow it and what it means.
The delphinium, or larkspur, is a tall flower with dense spikes in blue, sky blue, purple, pink or white. It stands for openness, lightness, joy and a love of new things. Blue delphinium offers a natural true blue that is rare in bouquets, so florists prize it. The full list is in birth month flowers.
July’s second flower is the water lily, a symbol of purity, calm and rebirth, blooming on ponds and lakes at the height of summer. How to grow one in your own pond is covered in water lilies and lotus.
What blooms in July
July is the month of hydrangeas, lilies, phlox, echinacea, rudbeckia and lavender. Ukraine’s lavender fields turn purple in July; when and how to cut lavender for bouquets and drying is covered in lavender guide. Late in the month the first sunflowers, gladioli and asters appear, heralding autumn.
A bouquet for July birthdays
July birthdays suit cool blue and white bouquets in honour of the delphinium: hydrangeas, roses, lisianthus and lavender. If delphinium isn’t available, blue hydrangeas carry the same mood. July falls under Cancer and Leo; Leo deserves bold, regal bouquets such as sunflowers or red roses.
Keeping flowers fresh in the heat
In hot weather flowers drink more and wilt faster. Keep the bouquet in the coolest room, away from sun and air conditioning, change the water daily and add flower food; we include it with UFL bouquets. Mist hydrangeas morning and evening. More tips are in our guide on making a bouquet last longer.
